Why is the military doing this?
The stated rationale is "warfighter readiness," but the underlying science is worth understanding, as it applies well beyond the military.
The Pentagon memo frames the program partly as a response to what researchers in 2020 dubbed "Operator Syndrome", a cluster of interrelated health problems observed in special operations veterans, including hormonal disruption, sleep disorders, and the downstream effects of chronic stress and traumatic brain injury.
