A "proprietary blend" sounds like intellectual property worth protecting. It's usually a way to hide that you're getting almost nothing.

Here's how it works. A supplement company lists six ingredients in their "Testosterone Matrix." Under each ingredient name: no dose. At the top of the blend: a single total weight, maybe 800mg. You have no idea how much of any individual ingredient you're getting. The company calls it a trade secret.

The reality: they don't want you to know the doses because the doses are embarrassing. When you know what the clinical research actually requires, you start asking questions about why there's only 50mg of ashwagandha in a formula when the studies use 300–600mg. Proprietary blends exist to prevent that question from being asked.

This is not speculation. It's a rational business decision, just not one made in your interest.

What a proprietary blend actually tells you

Under FDA labeling rules, supplement manufacturers are required to list all ingredients and their quantities — with one exception. If a manufacturer designates a combination of ingredients as a proprietary blend, they only need to disclose the total weight of the blend and list the ingredients within it in descending order of predominance by weight. Individual doses are optional.

What this means in practice: the first ingredient in the blend is the most prevalent by weight, and the last ingredient is the least. But "most prevalent" could mean 790mg or 120mg — you can't know from the label.

In a blend with a 800mg total and six ingredients, the last ingredient might be 5mg. It might be 1mg. It might be a trace amount included solely so the label can display the name.

This is sometimes called "fairy dusting" — adding just enough of a clinically credible ingredient to justify listing it, while providing a dose too small to have any effect. The label looks impressive. The formula doesn't need to work.

How to spot under-dosing even without a disclosed dose

Even inside a proprietary blend, you can often detect the problem if you know what the research requires.

Consider a formula listing "Testosterone Blend: 750mg" containing: ashwagandha extract, fenugreek extract, tongkat ali, zinc, boron, BioPerine.

Clinical research doses for these ingredients:

  • Ashwagandha (KSM-66): 300–600mg per day
  • Fenugreek extract (standardized to saponins): 500–600mg per day
  • Tongkat Ali: 200–600mg per day
  • Zinc: 15–30mg per day

Add those up: ashwagandha alone would require most of the blend's total weight to reach an effective dose. A blend listing four major ingredients at a combined 750mg total cannot contain meaningful amounts of any of them. The math doesn't work.

This is the fundamental problem with proprietary blends: the total weight tells you something. When a "comprehensive testosterone formula" lists eight ingredients in a 400mg blend, you can calculate roughly 50mg per ingredient on average — far below effective doses for almost everything on the label.

The "trade secret" argument doesn't hold up

The justification manufacturers give for proprietary blends is that disclosing individual doses would allow competitors to replicate their formula. There's a surface logic to this, but it falls apart quickly.

The ingredients in most testosterone support supplements are not proprietary. Ashwagandha, fenugreek, tongkat ali, zinc, vitamin D — these are commodities available from dozens of suppliers. The "trade secret" is supposed to be the combination and ratios. But if those ratios were genuinely differentiated and valuable, you'd want consumers to know what they are so they could appreciate the product's superiority.

Companies hide doses when the doses are indefensible — not when they're exceptional. If you had 400mg of KSM-66 ashwagandha per serving, the dose that matches the most-cited human RCT, you would put that on the label. That's a selling point. You hide the dose when you have 40mg.

What transparent labeling actually looks like

A fully transparent supplement label shows:

  • Each ingredient listed individually, not grouped into a blend
  • A specific dose for each ingredient (in mg, mcg, or IU)
  • Standardization percentages for botanical extracts (e.g., "standardized to 5% withanolides" for ashwagandha)
  • The form of the ingredient (e.g., "as Boron Citrate")

With that information, you can do three things: look up the clinical research for each ingredient, compare the formula dose to the research dose, and make an informed decision about whether you're getting an effective product.

Without it, you're trusting a marketing team.

The standardization detail most people miss

There's a version of label deception that doesn't require a proprietary blend. A product can list "Ashwagandha Extract 500mg" without disclosing the standardization — the percentage of active compounds (withanolides) in the extract. An unstandardized ashwagandha extract at 500mg may contain far less of the active compounds than a standardized extract at 300mg.

Clinical research on ashwagandha uses KSM-66 (standardized to 5% withanolides) or Sensoril (standardized to 10% withanolides). "Ashwagandha extract" without a standardization percentage could be anything from 1% to 5% withanolides — or no standardization at all.

The same applies to fenugreek (look for "standardized to 50% saponins"), tongkat ali (look for extract ratios like 100:1 or 200:1), and most botanical ingredients. If a label doesn't tell you the standardization, it's often because the unstandardized form costs a fraction of the price.

Why this matters for the category

The proliferation of proprietary blends has done measurable damage to the credibility of the supplement industry. Consumers have experienced so many products that underperformed their promises that widespread skepticism is now rational. That skepticism extends to products that actually use effective doses — because the label format doesn't let consumers tell the difference.

This is the problem transparency solves. When every dose is visible, the product has to stand or fall on the research behind it. A company that stakes its positioning on disclosed doses is committing to quality control — because the first customer who sends the product to an independent lab and finds a discrepancy can publicly document it.

Three things to check on any supplement label before purchasing:

1. Are individual doses disclosed? If you see "Proprietary Blend" followed by a list of ingredients with no individual doses, move on unless you can independently verify through third-party testing that effective doses are present.

2. Does the math work? Add up the clinical research doses for the key ingredients. If the blend total can't support effective amounts of even two or three of them, the formula is underdosed by design.

3. Are botanical extracts standardized? "Ashwagandha 500mg" and "KSM-66 Ashwagandha 500mg (standardized to 5% withanolides)" are meaningfully different products. The standardization tells you what you're actually buying.

Supplements can work. The research behind the best ingredients is legitimate. But the industry's structural incentive is to minimize ingredient costs while maximizing perceived value — and proprietary blends are the most reliable tool for doing that. The only protection you have is knowing what to look for.
